Lady Bantams Split with Belmont Abbey, Celebrate Sophomore Day
USC Union defeated Belmont Abbey 13-4 on Friday, April 19 thanks in part to seven runs in the third inning. Emma Chapman laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring one run, Matigan Nettles singled, scoring one run, Peyton Morris singled, scoring two runs, and Madison Goossens homered to center field, scoring three runs.
USC Union captured the lead, 4-1, in the bottom of the first when Morrishit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Sophie Caley homered to center field, scoring three runs.
In the bottom of the second, USC Union broke up the tie when Gracie Starnes grounded out, scoring one run. Then a single by Morris followed to extend the lead to 6-4.
Brianna Compton opened the game for USC Union, giving up nine hits and four runs (one earned) over four and two-thirds innings, striking out none and walking none.
USC Union collected 11 hits in the game.
Morris provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led USC Union with four runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-2 on the day. Caley, Morris, and Abby Benfield each collected two hits for USC Union. USC Union worked the count all day, amassing four walks.
Before the game, the team celebrated Sophomore Day, recognizing graduating players Sophie Caley, Brianna Compton, Peyton Morris, Matigan Nettles, Gracie Starnes, Emma Chapman, Madison Goossens, and Deanna Sweat. Congratulations ladies!
